10 Things To Avoid When Pregnant

Did you just find out that you are pregnant? If so, congratulations! If this is not your first pregnancy, then you know what to expect for the most part. The only thing you can't predict is that your current pregnancy will be the same as the previous one (s) you have had. However, if this is your first pregnancy, then you likely are not aware of all of the do's and don'ts even if you have done some research on it in the past.

You may have looked into what you can do during your pregnancy. But you must know right off the bat about the things you cannot do while you are pregnant. And there are 10 things you must not attempt during the time you are carrying your new baby. Let's go over them right now.

1. Don't Just Drink Any Herbal Teas

Do you have some herbal tea in your cupboard that you are looking to brew? You may want to hold off on that for the next nine months and then some if you are going to breastfeed. You don't know what type of effects different herbal teas can have on your pregnancy.

For instance, you will want to stay away from raspberry leaf tea as that can cause uterine contractions. However, it is a recommended tea to drink when you are overdue for obvious reasons. There are some herbal teas that are safe to drink during pregnancy but don't drink any before you talk to your OBGYN, midwife, or care provider just yet.

2. Stand For Hours

You can stand for a while during the early part of your pregnancy, but do not attempt to do it once your third-trimester hits. If you stand for too long, you can end up with high blood pressure and premature delivery, or a baby that has a low-birth-weight. If your line of work involves you standing for long periods of time, you will need to talk to your employer about how to accommodate you during the rest of your pregnancy. You will need to sit down for a while after standing for an hour at a time. You may have to take on different tasks.

3. Get Piercings Or Tattoos

Remember that your immune system is weaker during pregnancy. And you have no idea what kind of infections you can contract during your pregnancy. If your immune system is weak and compromised, then you will not be able to fight any infection you contract from the needles from tattoos or piercings easily. It can put your unborn baby at risk.

4. Eat Raw Or Deli Meats

Do you have a hotdog craving? You will want to hold off and replace it with a well-cooked burger instead. Meats such as hot dogs, deli meats, and raw and undercooked foods may contain the bacteria called listeria. When you are not pregnant and your immune system is functional, listeria will not usually have an effect on you except for maybe being sick. However, when you are pregnant, listeria can cause serious complications for your unborn baby and to you.

You will also not want to eat sushi, unpasteurized dairy, and meat products, and bagged lettuce, alfalfa sprouts, and vegetables as they can contain listeria as well.

5. Go For Botox

It has not been said that Botox is not safe during pregnancy but the effects are still unknown. Therefore, it is best to not get those Botox injections. If you don't want wrinkles, talk to your care provider about possibly going for fruit acids or alpha-hydroxy acid instead. Those are usually safe but again, talk to your care provider first.

6. Playing Contact Sports

Getting exercise is important during pregnancy, and it is best to take brisk walks, do some light weight lifting (keep it light), and swimming, and prenatal yoga. But do not play contact sports where you are required to run and catch a ball. That can increase your chances of falling and that can be disastrous. Steer clear of rollerblading or roller skating as well.

7. Don't Get Cosmetic Dentistry Done

Stay away from veneers or any type of cosmetic dentistry during your pregnancy. Remember that your gums are extremely sensitive. And you don't want to risk ending up with any type of periodontal ailments as that can easily be linked to preterm birth or preeclampsia. It can be linked to other pregnancy complications as well. Definitely put any work you want to be done on your teeth on hold.

8. Not Check The Mercury Levels Of The Fish You Want To Eat

Plenty of fish contains mercury which can have a negative effect on your unborn baby's nervous system. However, low levels of mercury in fish that you don't eat more than three times a week is not going to have an effect. Salmon is one of those safe fish to eat during pregnancy. In fact, salmon has a lot of important nutrients such as Omega 3 fatty acids that are good for the baby's brain and eye development. Halibut, trout, and seafood are also safe as their mercury levels are low as well. Here is the link to a guide for fish that is safe and not safe to eat during pregnancy.

However, stay away from shark meat, tuna steaks, King mackerel, and swordfish as the mercury levels are high in those fish.

9. Cleaning Kitty Litter

You will want to give the kitty litter clean up job to someone else in your home as being around cat feces can expose you to a parasite called toxoplasmosis. And this parasite can cause serious harm to your baby if exposed. Even though the odds of your cat having this infection are low, you still want to give the kitty litter clean up job to someone else. No chances can be taken.

10. Go On A Rollercoaster

You likely would not want to go on a rollercoaster during pregnancy, and this just confirms that you should not do it anyway. The thrill factor of rollercoasters is what can end up increasing your chances of ending up with placental abruption in addition to other potentially serious complications. If you really want to go on a rollercoaster, you will have to do so when you can have a trusted friend or babysitter watch your baby. Therefore, you will need to wait after your baby is born.

This is an exciting time of your life and you know what you need to do in order to keep your unborn baby and yourself safe and healthy. That is to not do anything listed above. Have a healthy pregnancy, delivery, and baby!
